Greater Manchester company insolvencies rise 43% to 126 in October

Gazette notices show 126 administrations, creditors' voluntary liquidations and compulsory liquidations in Greater Manchester in October 2026, up 43% from 88 in September 2026.

126 companies based in Greater Manchester entered administration, creditors’ voluntary liquidation or compulsory liquidation in October 2026, according to a count of insolvency notices published in The Gazette. The total was up 43% from 88 in September 2026 and up 19% from 106 in October 2025.

That was 92 creditors’ voluntary liquidations, 20 compulsory liquidations and 14 administrations.

Administrations were up 40% from 10 in September 2026 and up 100% from 7 in October 2025.

By council area, Manchester had the most, 36, followed by Salford (21), Wigan (15) and Bolton (12).

Wholesale and retail trade accounted for the largest number, 22, followed by information and communication (19) and construction (19). The sector of 1 company could not be matched from Companies House records.

Separately, 39 solvent companies in the area began members’ voluntary liquidations, against 24 in September 2026 and 24 in October 2025. A members’ voluntary liquidation closes a company that can pay its debts in full, so these are solvent closures and are not counted as insolvencies.

A further 34 winding-up petitions against companies in Greater Manchester were published. A petition does not by itself mean a company is insolvent.

Companies are placed by the trading address in the notice where the full notice has been read and gives one, otherwise by the location The Gazette records for the notice or the registered office held by Companies House, which for some companies in liquidation is the office of the insolvency practitioner. Fewer notices from earlier months have been read in full, so their area figures rely more on The Gazette’s recorded location. Each company is counted once per procedure in the month. These are Gazette notice counts, not the Insolvency Service’s official statistics.
