A 4.5 acre brownfield site in Altrincham will be put forward for more than 100 homes after Trafford Council’s Executive Committee agreed to prioritise it for housing, the council said on 20 October 2026.
The land, bordered by Oakfield Road and Moss Lane, sits next to Planet Ice, move Altrincham and Altrincham Interchange. It currently has parking for 320 vehicles and a secure cycle shelter.
Councillors chose residential development over retail, the council said, to make the best use of the site for local people. The exact number of homes will depend on plans that have still to be drawn up. A new masterplan, in its first stages, has received funding from the Greater Manchester Combined Authority.
Back under council control
The council said a previous agreement with a potential developer, dating back to 2007, was ended after the work did not progress, and the authority then regained control of the site.
The next step is to reduce the risk on the site and prepare it for sale, at a cost of £400,000, half of which is expected to come from the GM Good Growth Fund.
Councillor Liz Patel, Trafford Council’s executive member for economy and regeneration, said: “The site has been pending redevelopment for some years. We look forward to bringing the land back to life.”
Any housing scheme will still depend on further consultation and approvals, the council said.
